New Era Chiropractic offers a variety of adjusting techniques to custom tailor the care provided to best match an individual patient’s needs.

Diversified

Diversified is performed by hand and is the first technique that most people think of when they think of chiropractic. In reality it is composed of moves developed by doctors in the field that work great but don’t fall under the umbrella of other techniques. Like most techniques it works through precise positioning and a rapid thrust, not force.

Named for Clarence Gonstead, a pioneer of full spine adjusting, utilizes special positioning and X-ray line analysis to deliver highly specific adjustments. Gonstead is also performed by hand and is another one of the classically thought of adjusting methods.

Thompson The Thompson adjusting procedures are based on Gonstead and Diversified but with the addition of mechanical cocking table sections. The table is cocked up about an inch high under the patient. When the doctor thrusts the table drops back down. The drops are used to enable the doctor to use even less force because the body is gently put into motion. When the table bottoms out the vertebra goes back to its correct position due to its own momentum. The noise of the table dropping startles some first time patients but it is designed to be gentle.

This technique is centered on the use of the Activator adjusting instrument as well as leg length checks. The leg length checks utilize mild muscle stressing to locate subluxations in the spine. The Activator adjusting instrument is a hand held tool that delivers a very high speed, very low force thrust. Its speed enables it to deliver the adjustment before the surrounding muscles can resist. The activator is so low force it is hardly even felt.

Toggle is highly specialized and extremely specific. Only the top two vertebra are adjusted with this technique. Due to the specificity, once the top vertebra is aligned the body will align the rest of the spine on its own. Toggle is performed by hand with the patient in the side laying position and uses a drop mechanism under the head. X-rays are taken on the initial visit to aid the doctor in determining the exact degree of misalignment.

Atlas Orthogonal (AO) is the ultimate in no force precision adjusting. X-ray analysis for this technique involves measuring the misalignment to within half of a millimeter and half of a degree of rotation. AO is another upper cervical only technique, only adjusting the top vertebra to correct the entire spine.

What sets AO apart from other upper cervical techniques is that it is done with unique instrument mounted to its own table. The adjustment is made by sending a focused and vectored sound impulse through a stylus that is carefully positioned on the side of the neck. Like the swinging ball desk toys, the percussive wave moves the vertebra. There is no thrust.

Starting March 16, 2009 New Era Chiropractic will be one of only 4 clinics in Michigan that performs AO adjusting.

Adjusting our four legged friends is possible by simply modifying the same techniques that are used on humans. Pets can benefit just as much as their owners. Chiropractic helps keep animals happy and healthy. Common reasons animals get adjusted include hip dysplasia in dogs, negative moods in cats even increasing the speed of race horses.
